Hawthorne, Los Angeles County
Jack Northrop founded his aircraft company in Hawthorne in 1939, and the municipal airport still carries his name. The old Northrop plant along Crenshaw Boulevard later became the main rocket factory for SpaceX, which builds Falcon boosters and Dragon capsules there. A recovered Falcon 9 first stage stands upright outside the building.
